Ahh, the Superbowl – as far as games go, it was one of the best ones I have seen in a long time. It helps that I liked both teams - they both have great back stories (and the food you can get in Pittsburgh is great) – and that Bruce Springsteen rocks! [Side note - one of my best friends and her husband are huge Springsteen fans - you know the kind, travel the country to see him play in countless venues. A handful of years ago I joined them in Raleigh for my first Springsteen concert, and she convinced me to run up to the stage with her - we did - and then Bruce looked right at me and sang a line right to me! My friend couldn't believe it! But I know it was really just that he could see me and not her - she is 5'5" and I am 5'10" - height does have its advantages!] Any ole hoo….
Can you imagine being a football player about to play in the Superbowl and you “just weren’t in the mood?” You know, you just didn’t feel like playing today. I know for me that “not being in the mood” is one of my biggest excuses – it can really hold me back. And I bet it does you, too. My good friend and wordpress master Suzanne at http://www.vAssistantServices.com tweeted me with a great blog on this specific topic – not being in the mood.
Tom Volker (see his complete article/blog here) states that you need 5 things in place to help get and keep you in the mood. You need 1)recognition for the work you do, 2)realization or small epiphanies of how we are growing, 3)clarity on what we want, 4)results from the work we do, and 5)accountability to keep us doing what we say we are going to do.
In an earlier blog Seth Godin (see his complete blog here) stated that we have all of the information and knowledge we need to do what we say we want to do….. and yet we still don’t do it. And I have to agree with him.
My biggest hang-up is two fold – it is hard for me to see that I and my business continue to grow, and sometimes the results are a long time coming! My latest Mastermind group just started this month and I am so glad to have everyone back because having those types of conversations really help me “see” my growth and my “results.”
What’s your hang-up? What’s holding you back from doing the things you say you want to do? Post your comment – I’d love to know – and it just might help with #5 – accountability!

Hi Mary,
Glad you liked the article. I couldn’t resist paying you a visit with the Superbowl tie-in. Go Steelers, what a heart-thumping game. In Pittsburgh, many folks tend to adopt the prevailing mood of the town based on Steeler victories. Looking forward to lots of smiles today.
Hi Tom – I grew up in Elkins, WV so Pittsburgh (and DC) was “THE” city – and I love it so. My favorite piece of artwork of all time (ok, the Louvre has some good stuff too) is at the Carnegie-Mellon Museum and as I mentioned – LOVE the huge variety of cultural/ethnic food you can get there… I miss it! YAY for you and the Steelers and thanks for the inspirational writing on your blog.
Hey Mary,
I would say my biggest hang up on getting things done is just getting started!! Once I get going I don’t want to stop. But, it’s always that first step.
Your advise to look EVERY DAY at your reason for being in businss is overlooked by most people in business. We’ve heard about goal setting, which of course works. The mind keeps working overtime to achieve our goal if we keep it “in the forefront”
But the feel good reason we’re in business?
Keeping that in the front part of the brain will keep us happy to be doing what we’re doing.
I’m going to make a story board next week to hang on my office wall. My daily reminder!
Thanks Mary
