How long has it been since you paid attention to where your clients come from? If things have slowed down for your business, now is a good time to look at what has worked for you in the past to get a client – and start there. The process might need a little bit of tweaking, but if it has worked within the past year, it will probably work now.
Don’t forget you should always start with the people who already know, like and trust you, and once you are consistently staying in touch with that group, re-try something that has worked in your recent past.
It is so easy for us to get caught up in -What should I do? Where is my client coming from? That we look to new things that haven’t necessarily even been tested in our field – and we forget things that have worked in the past. One of my favorites is teaching a class -
– or assisting someone teaching a class. Funny how even when you are teaching someone exactly what you do – after they know like and trust you – they hire you to do that thing for them!
So if you are in the need for new clients, review what you have done before – it just might work for you again.

I’m a home stager and redesigner, but in a former life I was an elementary teacher, principal, assistant superintendent and college professor (totally 38 years). When I retired to go into this new venture, I couldn’t get the “teaching” out of my system. If you have expertise in a field, I would recommend that you contact the local community college about offering a NON-CREDIT course. I offer a two-day course for people who want to learn about staging their own home for sale and another course that meets weekly for an entire quarter to learn about elements of interior decorating. They’re both fun for me to teach and I have indeed met many people, some of whom have given me their own business and others who have referred me to their friends. At the very least, my name gets out there; people get to know and trust me, and I can add them to my database for ongoing contact. As Martha would say, “It’s all good.”
